Today’s word prompt is ’quiet’. Come join us at 6am PST (2pm in the UK) for 15 minutes of writing inspired by the word.
Please feel free to add your dash piece to the comments section of this blog post below.
If you want quick feedback attend the event inworld at 6am PST http://slurl.com/secondlife/Milk%20Wood/79/56/22
For more detailed feedback join the private Daily Writers’ Dash group.
N.B. Some call it hot penning or free writing, we like to call it a dash. If you are attending inworld, you’ll be provided with a word or picture prompt and the timer set for 15 minutes. Write whatever comes to you. Don’t fixate too heavily on what you are writing and disengage your inner editor. After the dash there will be an opportunity for you to show your work to the other participants.
If you can’t make the meet but want to dash later inworld, just set the timer and drop your notecard in the grey pencil by the caravan when you’re done. Anyone can click it for a folder of dashes from the day.
If you are dashing outside of Second Life® we welcome your dashes in the comments section below.
Look out for the daily prompts on Facebook, Twitter and Second Life® .

Listening to the quiet melody of a soft song, daydreaming under the willow tree, and wishing the day would never end. The golden light was reflected on the calm surface of an imaginary trail of shiny frail sparkles. This was what stood between her and the end, the quiet end.

QUIET
Quiet
as a complete absence of sound
doesn’t exist.
~ ~
In cities at night
there’s less sound,
but never “quiet”.
~ ~
Even in suburbs, towns, and villages,
farmlands, forests, deserts,
there’s always some sound.
~ ~
So, when we seek quiet,
we choose the sounds we want to hear.
~ ~
My well-loved quiet places
are anywhere in the wilderness
where leaves rustle,
ponds lap at their shores,
frogs ribbet,
chipmunks chatter,
the wind hums through branches,
raptors “skree” above the treetops,
small pebbles clatter down a rock,
bees busily buzz among the flowers,
and I am removed
from my clock and calendar world.

In the quiet
solitudes of Day
the mind recounts
corrects its space
for recollections sake
hollows its bowers
of remembering
to fill their Time
again
to walk the warm
moments
along the heart’s
sweet
avenues of
fulfilling
quietude
and drink in
deep
of Life’s rich
luxury
of Peace.

Hi there, the thought that comes to mind is that if you want to write, all you have to do is write. When the drive is strong enough, you will write. It’s not about getting paid or even getting read. That would be a bonus, of course, but the beauty of writing is that you can just sit down and do it. It requires nothing more. What happens beyond that depends on commitment and a certain amount of luck, but the practical wisdom I’ll share with you comes from one of my favorite quotes by Bernard Malamud – You write by sitting down and writing.
